Group Classes
Group classes can be another valuable way to study the Alexander Technique. While students don't receive as much individual attention as in a private lesson, group classes offer the benefits of observation, group activities and discussion. They can be an excellent way to get an introduction to the Technique or focus on a specialized activity, and can serve as a useful supplement to individual lessons. Imogen is currently offering the following group classes:
Alexander Technique Basics
Mondays, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
April 16 - June 4, 2012
Brandywine YMCA, Wilmington, DE

In this series of classes become familiar with the basic principles of the Alexander Technique while you explore how your mind and body can work together to reduce stress and improve your body mechanics in everyday movement. Taught through a combination of hands-on guidance and verbal instruction, the Alexander Technique is used to improve posture, balance and coordination, while reducing strain and muscular tension. It can help prevent or alleviate conditions associated with excess tension and poor posture, such as neck, back and shoulder pain. Suitable for beginners and those with prior experience with the Alexander Technique.

At the computer do you get so immersed in what you're doing that you totally forget about your body... until it starts to hurt? Are you totally sucked in to that computer screen so that everything else ceases to exist? And only when the pain in your back (or your neck, or your arm...) draws your attention away from the computer, do you perhaps notice the way you've been sitting and try and adjust, but you just can't get comfortable. The Alexander Technique provides a way for us to be aware of and change the way we use ourselves while we are sitting at the computer.
In this small group class you will learn what it means to sit upright without stiffness - in a way that will relieve your aches and pains AND make you more productive. Get tips on how to set up your chair and computer station at work or at home so as to promote good posture and reduce strain. You'll also discover the benefits of lying down in the "balanced resting state" as a way to relieve the tension and stress of many hours sitting at a desk, restoring good, natural spinal alignment.
