Meets the Last Wednesday of the Month
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
My book club started meeting in January 2013. This informal group meets once a month to discuss a book about, or that may relate in some way to, the Alexander Technique and well-being in general. Reading about the Technique itself helps our understanding of ideas and concepts, and being able to discuss those ideas with others is even more beneficial. This also helps you keep the concepts in your mind, so the ideas are more available to you to use throughout your day, thus helping solidify your own personal work with the Technique. Reading about related topics also helps broaden understanding and can shed new light on concepts and ideas by looking at them from a totally different perspective.
Our next book is Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy, who you may know from her TED Talk on body language in which she introduced the idea of Power Poses.
By accessing our personal power, we can achieve “presence,” the state in which we stop worrying about the impression we’re making on others and instead adjust the impression we’ve been making on ourselves. As Harvard professor Amy Cuddy’s revolutionary book reveals, we don’t need to embark on a grand spiritual quest or complete an inner transformation to harness the power of presence. Instead, we need to nudge ourselves, moment by moment, by tweaking our body language, behavior, and mind-set in our day-to-day lives.
Amy Cuddy has galvanized tens of millions of viewers around the world with her TED talk about “power poses.” Now she presents the enthralling science underlying these and many other fascinating body-mind effects, and teaches us how to use simple techniques to liberate ourselves from fear in high-pressure moments, perform at our best, and connect with and empower others to do the same.
Brilliantly researched, impassioned, and accessible, Presence is filled with stories of individuals who learned how to flourish during the stressful moments that once terrified them. Every reader will learn how to approach their biggest challenges with confidence instead of dread, and to leave them with satisfaction instead of regret. [From Amazon]
Presence is available from Amazon and most other book stores.
The Book Club is free to join, and I host it in my home. I’ve also created a private Facebook Group for us to continue the discussions between meetings, and for people unable to attend in person. The only cost involved is the price of the book/s. We’d love to have you join us!
If you’re interested in joining, either in person or the Facebook group, or simple want to find out more, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 302 384 8454. Guests are always welcome.
